Genus: Bordetella.
• Small G- strict aerobes.
Bordetella pertussis:
• Grows on: Regan-Lowe or Bordet-Gengou media.
• Direct immunoflorescence on nasopharyngeal smear.
• Capsule.
• Found in respiratory tract; transmitted by respiratory droplets.
Pathogenesis:
• Attaches to nasopharyngeal mucosal ciliated epithelial cells with aid of pertussis toxin.
Mechanism of Bordetella Toxins:
• Adenylate cyclase: inhibits phagocytosis.
• Tracheal cytotoxin: interferes with ciliary action.
• Pertussis toxin: ADP ribosylation of Gi.
Disease:
Whooping Cough:
• Catarrhal (1-2 weeks);
• Paroxysmal (2-4 weeks);
• Convalescence (>3 weeks).
Treatment:
• Erythromycin.
