Genus: Borrelia.

• Larger spirochete; Gram -; microaerophillic.

Borrelia burgdorferi.

• Found on white-footed mice, and white-tailed deer ticks.

• Spread by Ixodes (deer) ticks and nymphs.

Pathogenesis:

• Skin invasion and spread via blood stream to joints, heart, CNS; arthritis.

Lyme Disease:

• Bull's eye lesion; fever, chills, malaise, headache, musculoskeletal pain, lymphadenopathy.

• Late: neurologic and cardiac effects.

• Later: arrhythmias, myocarditis, pericarditis.

Lab:

• Detect IgM and IgG in serum, but not accurate though.

Treatment:

• Doxycycline, amoxicillin, and azithromycin/clarithromycin.

Prevent Borrelia Infection:

• Avoid tick bite.
