Campylobacter:
• Microaerophilic G- curved rod with polar flagella.
Diagnosis:
• Grows on Campy medium or Skirrow's agar; oxidase positive; gull's wings.
Habitat:
• Found in intestinal tracts of humans, cattle, sheep, and poultry.
Transmission:.
• Fecal-to-oral transmission from poultry.
Pathogenesis:
• Inflammatory diarrhea; may complicate to Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Treatment:
• Erythromycin, fluoroquinolones, penicillin-resistant.
Helicobacter pylori:
• G- spiral gastric bacilli with flagella.
• Microaerophillic.
• Grows on Campy medium or Skirrow's agar; oxidase positive.
• Found in humans; fecal-oral; oral-oral.
Pathogenesis:
• Motile.
• Urease-positive: allows survival in stomach.
• Mucinase: aids in mucosal penetration.
• Invasive.
Diseases:
• Chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcers.
• Stomach cancer.
• Type I carcinogen.
Diagnosis:
• Giemsa or silver stain.
• Breath test: 13C-urea swallowed; ammonia + 13C-CO2 produced.
Treatment:
• Omeprazole + amoxicillin + clarithromycin.
