DEFENSE MECHANISM | PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESS | RELEVANT EXAMPLE |
Rationalization | Providing rational justification for one's failures. | Committing fraud "because everyone is doing it." |
Regression | Individual resorting to an earlier immature behavior. | Boss shouting at a junior. |
Aggression | Venting aggression toward persons or objects unrelated to original source of frustration. | Being rude to a subordinate after an argument with the boss. |
Fantasy | Daydream in order to escape from work. | Employee day-dreams of correcting the boss in a meeting and being called real brains of the company. |
Negativism | Active or passive resistance operating subconsciously. | Manager rejecting committee recommendations because he cannot join the committee. |
Resignation, flight or withdrawal | Getting away from a place where anxiety and conflict is experienced. | Student quitting a course after failing the exam. |
