Why does amenorrhea occur in anorexia nervosa?
Amenorrhea results from loss of pulsatile GnRH release from the hypothalamus.
NOTE: Auer rods stain positive for myeloperoxidase.
What biochemical activity is noted in Alzheimer's disease?
Decrease in Ach level (most notably in the basal nucleus of Meynert) due to decreased choline acetyltransferase activity in nucleus basalis.
What happens to blood pressure when only alpha-1 receptors are stimulated?
Diastolic blood pressure is increased.
What are the findings and causes of gingivostomatitis?
Findings include swollen gums with ulcerative lesions, enlarged cervical lymph nodes, fever, loss of appetite, and irritability. The cause is HSV-1 (enveloped double-stranded DNA virus).
What are the toxic effects of anticholinergic medications?
Blockade of muscarinic receptors, which cause facial flushing and dilated pupils.
What is the mechanism of action of cocaine?
Prevents norepinephrine reuptake.
Cardiac drugs
• Atrial fibrillation - Digoxin, beta blockers, class III as last resort.
• Atrial and ventricular Arrhythmias - Quinidine/Procainamide/Disopyramide; class III as last resort.
• Supraventricular tachycardia - Class IC, IV, Adenosine.
• Ventricular arrhythmia - Lidocaine/Mexiletine/Tocainide, beta-blockers; class III as last resort.
Epithelial junctions
• Tight junction / zona occludens: glands; only columnar cells.
• Gap junction: heart, bones.
• Hemidesmosomes: basal lamina.
• Intermediate filaments / zona adherens: cells stick together (reinforcement).
• Desmosomes / macula adherens: bind cells together (main).
