How can uterine leiomyomas cause microcytic anemia?
Uterine leiomyomas can cause iron deficiency (increased transferring and decreased ferritin), and this causes microcytic anemia.
What is polyarteritis nodosa?
Necrotizing vasculitis of small and medium-sezed arteries involving all organs except lungs. Seen in Hepatitis B patients. Associated with HBsAg and p-ANCA.
What is bcl-2?
Anti-apoptosis gene.
Note: osteogenesis imperfecta is an example of pleiotrophy.
What confirms recent alcohol abuse?
Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase.
Describe a toxoplasma gondii infection:
Toxoplasma gondii infection is mostly caused in immuno-compromised patients. The infection is usually acquired during childhood, and remains dormant within the host. Think "ring-enhancing" lesions in the brain.
What is a bicuspid aortic valve?
This is a very common congenital anomaly. A systolic ejection click is heard with the bicuspid aortic valve. There may be no findings or there may be a modest noncyanotic obstruction related to stenosis.
How does streptococcus pneumoniae acquire drug resistance?
Transformation - it can bind free DNA from its environment and import it.
What is specialized transduction?
Involves transfer of drug-resistance genes as an accident of the life cycle of a temperate phage. Phages may be involved in transfer of drug resistances.
What is generalized transduction?
Involves the transfer of drug-resistance genes as an accident of the life cycle of a lytic phage.
