Management of Acute Deep Venous Thrombosis
Rahul's Noteblog Notes on Pulmonology Management of Acute Deep Venous Thrombosis
DVT Management Organization:
Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) management is divided into acute anticoagulation and clot stabilization, chronic anticoagulation, and treatment of DVT-related complications.
Initial Therapy:
A heparin-based product is used for initial stabilization. Within the first five days, both heparin and warfarin are given.
Chronic Therapy:
For chronic management, only warfarin is used. However, warfarin becomes therapeutic only after five days. Hence, after five days, heparin is stopped and warfarin is continued.
New DVTs:
For patients with any new DVTs, compression stockings are recommended to decrease the risk of post-phlebitic syndrome.
INR Monitoring:
The INR of patients taking anticoagulation therapy must be maintained between 2 and 3.
