Definition of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage:

Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a life-threatening diagnosis.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage most often occurs following acute head trauma. Other precedents are intracranial aneurysm and intracranial A-V malformations.

Risk is increased by high blood pressure, anticoagulant use, and a family history of cerebrovascular accident. Thirty-five percent of patients will die within 1 week of the initial bleed. Twenty percent of patients will present with a "warning bleed" such as this patient. Warning bleeds are repeat small bleeds through areas of arterial bifurcations that may be weakened by arteriosclerosis.

Warning bleeds are predictive of an aneurysm rupture within 3 months. They cause sudden acute headaches during the initial vascular failure and meningeal irritation leading to pain and stiffness with cervical flexion during the blood resorption phase.
