Notes on Negative sense RNA viruses
Rahul's Noteblog Notes on Virology Notes on Negative sense RNA viruses
Paramyxovirus:
• Helical.
• Mumps: parotitis, pancreatitis, orchitis, meningoencephalitis; live vaccine available.
• Measles/Rubeola: 3 Cs: Cough, coryza, conjunctivitis; giant cell pneumonia, Koplik spots from ears down; live vaccine available.
• RSV: bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants; common cold.
• Parainfluenza: croup; common cold.
Rhabdovirus:
• Bullet shaped.
• Rabies: negri bodies seen - these are intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies.
• Vesicular stomatitis: foot and mouth disease.
Filovirus:
• Helical.
• Marburg; Ebola: acute hemorrhagic fever; frequently fatal.
Orthomyxovirus:
• Helical.
• Influenza: separate H and N glycoproteins.
• Complications: Guillain-Barre or Reye's syndrome.
• Genetic shift/drift.
Bunyavirus:
• Helical.
• California encephalitis, La Crosse encephalitis: mosquito-borne; young patients.
• Hantavirus: Hanta virus pulmonary syndrome; rodent feces.
Arenavirus:
• Helical.
• Lymphocytic choriomeningitis: South American.
• Lassa Fever: West Africa; hemorrhagic fever.
Note: All the above viruses are enveloped.
