What are Variable Decelerations of Fetal Heart Rate?
• These are abrupt decreases in fetal heart rate below the baseline of at least 15 beats/min onset to nadir of < 30s.
• These are variable in relation to contractions.
• Mediated by vagal stimulation.
• Due to umbilical cord compression.
Mild Variable Decelerations:
• Drop by 15-40 beats/min.
Moderate Variable Decelerations:
• Drop by 40-60 beats/min.
Severe Variable Decelerations:
• Drop > 60 beats/min or last ≥ 60 seconds.
