Genus: Rickettsia.

• Obligate intracellular bacteria.

Rickettsia rickettsii.

• Gram - cell; cannot make sufficient ATP; Weil-Felix reaction.

• Found in rodents and dogs.

Transmitted by:

• Hard ticks; dermacentor.

Pathogenesis:

• Endothelial lining invasion, causing vasculitis.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever:

• Rash on ankles and wrists; spreads to palms, soles, and face.

• Ankle and wrist swelling.

Diagnosis:

• Lab confirmation: Weil-Felix test.

Treatment:

• Doxycycline.
