Genus: Mycoplasma.

• Smallest free living bacteria.

• No cell wall - missing peptidoglycan.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

• Growth on Eaton's agent.

• Extracellular, tiny, flexible; cannot be Gram-stained.

• No cholesterol synthesis.

Habitat:

• Found in human respiratory.

Transmission:

• Transmitted by respiratory droplets.

Pathogenesis:

• Attached to respiratory epithelium using P1 protein.

• Inhibits ciliary action.

• Produces H2O2, superoxide radicals, and cytolytic enzymes.

Diseases:

• Pneumonia.

Lab:

• Fried egg colonies on Mycoplasma or Eaton's media.

• + cold agglutinins test works 65% of time.

Treatment:

• Erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin.

Ureaplasma urealyticum:

• Urease maker; urethritis; can cause renal calculi.
