Genus: Listeria.
• Gram+; non-spore forming rod; tumbling motility.
• Facultative intracellular.
Listeria monocytogenes:
• Beta-hemolytic rod; cold growth; nonspore-former on blood agar.
• Found in animal GI and genital tracts, unpasteurized milk, plants and soil.
• Cold growth: soft cheese, deli meats, coleslaw.
• Transmitted by food, contact, and delivery.
Pathogenesis:
• Listeriolysin O (a beta-hemolysin) facilitates rapid escape before lysosome and phagosome fuse.
Diseases:
Listeriosis:
• Diarrhea in healthy adults.
• Fever and chills in pregnant women.
• Neonatal disease (granulomatosis infantiseptica) in babies.
• Septicemia and meningitis in immunocompromized people.
• Meningitis in patients with renal transplants.
Treatment:
• Ampicillin with gentamicin added for immunocompromized patients.
